While there has been considerable analysis of the US economic and environmental implications of LNG exports, there has been less analysis to date on the impact on Pacific energy markets, economic growth, CO2 emissions, or geopolitical and international security priorities. This forum will address these and other issues and attempt to lay the groundwork for future research projects and for sustained US-Pacific collaboration in assessing and refining policies and technologies that support safe and responsible natural gas development. Participants will discuss gradebook usage with their peers and take a look at CourseWorks-SSOL grade submission techniques.

Haiti is a country of converging natural hazards: floods, earthquakes, erosion and hurricanes. To understand how environmental perceptions link to behavior a panel, that includes a story teller, a radio host and a risk perception psychologist, will discuss how individuals process and understand information that is critical to daily lives and livelihoods. The panel will address how communities and individuals perceive risks and what information helps them make decisions? This dialogue series focuses on how story telling and communication programs can help to shape these perceptions and inform decisions. While this discussion is focused on Haiti, the panelists will address the question in a broader framework.

Gilloon Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering (on leave), California Institute of Technology. Uncertainties about how clouds and particularly low clouds respond to climate change are principally behind the uncertainties in climate change projections. If low cloud cover increases as the climate warms, the increased planetary albedo implies a damping feedback on climate changes; if low cloud cover decreases as the climate warms, the reduced albedo implies an amplifying feedback. Existing theories and climate models do not even agree on the sign of low cloud cover changes as the climate warms, much less their magnitude. But now is the time to make fundamental progress: We are in a golden age of data on clouds from field studies and space-based observations, and advances in computational fluid dynamics (large-eddy simulations) now allow us to simulate cloud dynamics faithfully with resolutions of O(1 m) in domains with horizontal size O(100 km)---the size of a typical climate model grid box. To constrain and understand cloud feedbacks, we are developing a hierarchical modeling framework in which high-resolution simulations, validated with data for the present climate, are driven on the large scale by environmental conditions derived from coarser climate model simulations. Insights gained from such climatically relevant high-resolution simulations are then used to derive a unified representation of turbulent cloud and boundary-layer processes in climate models. I will present results from this approach that constrain the magnitude of how marine boundary layer clouds change with climate and provide insight into the physical processes controlling these changes.

Department of Astronomy: Public Lecture & Stargazing - 65462

"Exoplanets Everywhere!" by Emily Rice. Public access to rooftop telescopes and stargazing after lecture, weather permitting. Lecture occurs regardless.

Every other Friday, the Astronomy Department at Columbia University sponsors public outreach. Attendees get access to astronomical information through timely lectures by members of our department aimed at a public audience. After the thirty-minute lecture, if the weather is clear, the public can proceed to the roof of Pupin Hall and be guided by volunteers in stargazing and observing through the telescopes of Rutherfurd Observatory. A slide show and discussion with an astronomer about various astronomical images happens if the weather is cloudy. "Exoplanets Everywhere!" by CUNY College of Staten Island Assistant Professor, Emily Rice. Abstract: According to the most recent results from Kepler and other surveys, exoplanets are everywhere in the Milky Way Galaxy, and likely the entire Universe. But how close are we to finding another Earth or to answering the eternal question: are we alone in the Universe? I will explain how we came to understand the ubiquity of exoplanets, describe the complexity of the current census, and foreshadow what discoveries likely lie ahead in the coming years.
