All applications for admission must be made through the Office of Admissions, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, 107 Low Library, Columbia University, New York, NY 10027. To request an application, please call Admissions at 212-854-4737, or visit the Graduate School’s website to download the application or apply online. Applications for both the part-time M.A. and the Ph.D. programs are due to the Admissions Office by December 15th for fall admission. The Department of History does not consider applications that arrive after that date. The Graduate School does not grant deferrals; students must register in the term specified for admission. A student unable to register then, but wishing to be admitted in a subsequent year, must request reactivation of his/her application.
Although applications must be submitted through the Graduate School’s Admissions Office, decisions on admission are made by members of the History Department faculty. All elements of the application—academic records, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, personal statement, and writing sample—are important. The most important element, however is very often the writing sample, and rarely is a student admitted without submitting one.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to develop a capacity to read scholarly work in the language or languages required for their proposed field of study before enrolling in the Ph.D. program.
