Biography
Tristan Brown is a doctoral student in the East Asia: China track. He received his B.A. with honors from Harvard College in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and East Asian Languages and Civilizations (2010) and his MA in History from Columbia University (2011). Tristan has split his time between research trips through western China and Classical Arabic study and personal travel in Tunisia, Israel/Palestine, Jordan, Syria, and Egypt.  For his graduate work, he plans on using Chinese, Arabic, and Uyghur sources to investigate Sino-Muslim trading networks in western China and their role in China's empire-nation-state transition. By researching the role of local economy and regional trading diasporas as they involved minority groups, he hopes to explore new dimensions of ethnicity, economy, and non-state actors in modern Chinese history.
