Get to Know Us and Help Make History

The Columbia University Department of History is one of the leading centers of historical scholarship in the world. Our growing faculty, together with colleagues in the Barnard College Department of History and historians in other departments of the University, study all aspects of human history, from ancient to contemporary societies, across the entire globe. Our community includes each year around 200 graduate students and 250 undergraduate majors and concentrators.  Our department has always possessed particular strengths in the history of North America, Eastern and Western Europe, and East Asia, and in recent years it has become a leader in the field of International and Global History and History of Science.

Friends of the Department

If you are interested in history teaching and research, the department invites you to join the Friends of the Department of History.  Friends receive regular electronic notices about departmental activities and are invited to many departmental lectures and other events.

We also welcome news from our alumni’s recent experiences and activities for inclusion in our announcements and publications.

To join our list of friends and alumni, please email Amy S. Kohn, Development and Communications Coordinator, ask130@columbia.edu.  Please write Friends of the Department on the subject line and include your name, postal address, and area of interest.

Supporting the Department

The History Department believes that historical knowledge and scholarship are a crucial public resource, and works to make the scholarship of its faculty and of the community of historians more generally accessible to the widest public.  We are immensely grateful to our patrons for sharing that vision with us.

We invite you to help make history and to join us in this work, by supporting the department with a tax-deductible financial contribution.

Many of our faculty members conduct research that crosses traditional geographical boundaries.  One important component of this initiative is the Center for International History (http://www.columbia.edu/cu/cih/index.html), directed by Professor Mark Mazower.

The department is also committed to building and maintaining strengths in other areas such as the history of North America and Eastern Europe, as well as in the field of the History of Science.
