2010 College Crown Awards given to 44 publications

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association announced its top awards for collegiate publications at the 32nd annual College Media Convention. This year 1,558 magazines, newspapers, yearbooks and digital media sites of current CSPA members were eligible to enter the Crown Awards. Judging for printed publications took place at Columbia University from December 19-21, 2009 by the Board of Crown Judges. Publications were judged on writing/editing, design, content, concept, photography, art and graphics. Online news and magazine sites were judged at Columbia in February 2010. Six college magazines, one online magazine site, three newspapers, five online news sites, and three yearbooks received Gold Crown Awards while 26 other college media received the second highest CSPA award, known as the Silver Crown.

CSPA's Annual Scholastic Convention

CONVENTION ADVISORY PROGRAM AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD

The CSPA invites high school students and faculty advisers to attend and celebrate CSPA’s 86th Annual Convention. This national gathering of student editors and faculty advisers to newspapers, yearbooks, magazines, video productions, and online media will be held at Columbia University from Wednesday, March 17 through Friday, March 19, 2010.

Delegates can choose from 405 sessions organized in seven sequences: newspaper, yearbook, magazine, digital media, video/broadcasting, law and ethics and advisers. All seven sequences will run simultaneously throughout the three days of the convention.

Throughout the Convention, our hourly schedule boasts a variety of special events, including Advisers’ Luncheons on Thursday and Friday. In addition, the Columbia Scholastic Press Advisers Association (CSPAA) will meet on Friday.

The winners of the Crown Awards for top publications will be announced and presented at the Awards Convocation on Friday afternoon.

CSPA and AGI to present Photoshop, InDesign and video training sessions during Convention

Following positive reviews to similar sessions during the 2009 Spring Convention, CSPA has invited instructors from Aquent Graphics Institute to present technology training sessions during the 2010 Convention in March.

 

During the Wednesday (March 17th) and Thursday (March 18th) program, AGI will present Photoshop CS4 and video production sessions throughout the day.  InDesign CS4 sessions will be available on Thursday, March 18th only.

CSPA Announces 2010 Online Magazine and Newspaper Crown Finalists

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) announced the finalists of their 2010 online newspaper competition on February 17, 2010 at Columbia University in the City of New York.

Edmund J. Sullivan, executive director of the Association, released the names of the 27 high school, one workshop and 11 college finalists, citing that each of these publications will receive either a Gold or Silver Crown in March, 2010. There will be no further judging.

Collegiate Crown Award finalists will be presented with either a Gold or Silver Crown Award during the College Media Convention at the CSPA Award ceremony on March 14, 2010 at the Marriott Marquis in New York, NY. The Awards Convocation for Scholastic Crown recipients will take place during CSPA's 86th annual Convention, on Friday, March 19, 2010 in the Roone Arledge Auditorium of the Alfred Lerner Student Center on Columbia's Morningside Heights campus. The decisions of the Crown Judges are final. Only when results are released by the CSPA should they be considered authoritative.

Finalists are winners, not nominees. Each finalist will be revealed as either a Gold or Silver Crown at the awards ceremonies.

2010 Crown Print Finalists Chosen

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association has posted the list of finalists for its Crown Awards program for scholastic (middle, junior and senior high school) and collegiate publications at its official website.

A total of 1,558 newspapers, magazines and yearbooks published during the 2008-2009 academic year were eligible in the 2010 Crown Awards program.

Since the CSPA dates its awards by the year in which they are given, this announcement concerns the 2010 Crown Awards.

The grand total of 157 Crowns consists of 37 magazines, 64 newspapers and 56 yearbooks. Of these, 124 Crowns will be given to scholastic publications and 33 Crowns to collegiate publications.

Crown Award finalists are guaranteed to receive either a Gold or Silver Crown Award in March 2010. No further judging will take place.

Scholastic and Collegiate Crown Awards are presented at separate ceremonies on two different days in March, 2010.
